What am I still doing in Cancun?

The adventures of an American single mommy working and playing in paradise.

Our Day at the Ocean Spa Hotel in Cancun

So sometimes living and working in “paradise” has it’s perks. This weekend work gave me day passes to the Ocean Spa Hotel for my little family.

We arrived at about 10:30 am, just in time for the breakfast buffet. Of course our little boy wouldn’t eat anything (this is a whole other blog post) but Mom and Dad had french toast, eggs and other normal breakfast buffet fare. They had a great selection of natural juices. There must have been 7 or 8 different kinds…papaya, orange, pineapple, apple and many more.

On the way to the pool (bebe couldn’t wait any longer) we stopped at the bar for a couple of beers. It was noon somewhere and we knew we were in for a rough day. Our little one NEVER stops.

They have a great kiddie pool. Our 17 month old can actually stand (and fall down oops) in it.

In the morning we had the kiddie pool to ourselves...

Ocean Spa Hotel pool

...and actually the other pools as well!

The Ocean Spa has three pools: the kiddie pool, a warmish very large hot tub and the big deep swimming pool. They were clean but didn’t smell like chlorine and there was a guy going from one to the other all day cleaning them. It wasn’t long before el niño got tired of the kiddie pool and wanted to go in the hot tub.

First with Papa…

then with Mama. He doesn’t look like he’s having any fun at all!

We spent a lot of time taking turns going from pool to pool with the little one. Little by little people joined us in the pool area. Probably because water aerobics was about to start!

They played some pretty loud music during water aerobics, but they turned it off afterwards. One thing I really liked about this place was that there wasn’t loud music and people talking on a microphone all day. There were other activites as well, like bingo, and it also looked like someone was getting ready to play beach soccer!

Another thing I liked about this small hotel…plenty of chairs and beach beds available. There weren’t any obnoxious chair saving people!

Beach beds…wish I could have crashed on one and read a book!

Chair and palapa anyone?

And this will be the view from your chair. Not bad!

After awhile it was obvious that el niño was tired, so we got him into some dry clothes (a diaper and a Gerber t-shirt) and gave him his milk and put him in his stroller.

You think I am gonna sleep here? muahahahahaha Yeah right!

Maybe he couldn’t sleep because Superman showed up!

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s Superman (Bringing you fruit?)!

Since it didn’t look like bebe was going to sleep, we went back to the buffet for lunch. Breakfast had been pretty good, lunch was decent. There is also an ala carte restaurant in the lobby which I’m sure is really good, but it only opens in the evenings. I wish we’d had a chance to try it but we couldn’t stay that late because Papi had to work and el niño was getting fiesty. The bar, which is in the lobby but is also part of the restaurant is small but pretty.

Very cute ala carte restaurant called Frida. (Named after my favorite artist Frida Kahlo?)

We had a great day at the Ocean Spa. I can’t say it was relaxing but that’s not because of the hotel, it’s because of our 17 month old son! I saw a lot of people just reading or relaxing and a lot of people participating in the activities. There were Americans guests but no Spring Breakers (Whew!) and there were a lot of families, many from Mexico and South America. This is not the Ritz Carlton, but that’s fine because it’s not meant to be. It is a 3 star hotel and in my opinion it’s a great place to stay for the traveler who wants an economical beach vacation in Cancun.
