My Dislocated-Broken Arm… One Year Update

One year ago this week I dislocated and broke my arm during a weekend visit to Tulum.

This will be my very last update about my arm. For the most part it feels normal. Sometimes there is some clicking and clacking and it does feel a little odd when I do certain movements.

Compare these two pictures to the ones in this post and you will see the progress I have made! At one point the doctor told me that I might not be able to touch hands above my head anymore, but as you can see…I can!

I hope that weight training and stretching will help to improve the second position even more. I also hope to make another weekend visit to Tulum soon, one without any accidents!

  1. Hurray! Looks normal to me :):)

  2. Wow .. normal again! Time sure goes by fast .. can’t believe it’s been a year.

  3. You gave me hope. Six weeks ago I fractured my humerus and severely dislocated my shoulder. Today is day one out of the stablizing sling. I still have a lot of pain and little to no movement. My doc has me doing the pendulum swing with my arm. Doc said I will probably never raise my right arm above my shoulder. It is great to see that you have far surpassed that. I start physical therapy next week also no health insurance. I am motivated to get it back to normal. I am right handed, more frustration, I am 52, so I know it will take some time. Thanks for posting your complete recovery process. All the best to you.

    • Lizabeth, I am so sorry to hear about your arm, but I am so happy to hear that you are motivated. Don’t listen to that doctor! 😉 I take it that you injured your right arm? I am right handed but injured my left arm so I was lucky in that respect. It does take time but try to be patient and do all of your exercises, even when you don’t feel like it. 🙂 Good luck and take care!!

  4. Hi! So glad I came across your site as I really need encouragement! Four weeks and 5 days ago I was on vacation and fell. Broke my right proximal humerus and unfortunately I am right handed. No surgery just a sling. Have had 4 physical therapy sessions so far. OMG. I thought something was gonna snap for sure. I am an impatient person but im trying!. I have seen a little progress. I cant believe how it hurts so bad. Seems like the pain will be there forever. I hope not!
glad to find this site. Haven’t read it all yet but I will!

    • Hi Valerie,

Sorry to hear about your accident and that it was your right hand! Are they giving you exercises to do at home? I actually didn’t have a lot of pain (except for when the therapist did her thing). How high can you lift your arm right now? 4 weeks out I was still in the sling/immobilizer!

I’m glad I could help a little…things will get better…I promise, but ya gotta do the work. 😉

      • Hi! Thanks for you reply! Oh yes, they are giving me MANY exercises to do at home! I think they have an endless list of arm/shoulder exercises! I have pulleys, and bands, and balls, all sorts of things to help me along. I can lift my arm up high enough to touch my eyebrow. It’s still painful. I am back at work, but not driving yet. The therapist told me I need to stop grimacing when I do the exercises. She ought to be grateful that’s all I’m doing because sometimes I feel like screaming! I go back to my doctor next week. Hopefully he will say the bone has healed!

        • It’s wonderful that you can touch your eyebrow…very encouraging! Do those exercises, the more you do, the less they will hurt!
